Flash or hard drive?
Flash has less space but makes for a lighter, smaller player. Hard drives are heavier but have tons of room. Allow roughly 1MB of space per minute of music.
Battery life?
Rechargeable batteries can't be changed out on the fly. If that's important, go with one that takes disposables. Note: iPod's battery is non-replaceable.
Can I use MP3s on my iPod?
Yes, you can rip CDs and MP3s for your iPod. But songs bought from iTunes are AAC files, and will only work on iPods.
